Paint Shop Pro Tutorial: Pop-up Text

This tip will show how you can make text or other shapes seem to "pop out" of your image or photograph.

1.

Begin by opening up the image/photograph you wish to place your special text on (or create an image to work on). Change the background color to black and select the Text Tool, click where you want the pop-up text to appear. In the Text Tool's dialogue box choose a font and size to use and make sure that Floating is left unchecked.

Example 1

2.

With the Text Tool still selected, click and drag within the selection a little up and to the left. This should leave a black outline of the text behind while moving the selected portion of the image.

Example 2

3.

You may have noticed that it's difficult to see the text that you moved now, so to make it show up a bit better choose Colors »Adjust »Brightness/Contrast and turn up the brightness to somewhere around 10-12 and contrast to 5-6. You may also adjust the saturation to around 4 and lightness to around 18 by pressing SHIFT+H.

4.

Next we will want to make the background of the image a tad darker so that the text will stand out better. The first step is to invert the selection by choosing Selections »Invert and then press SHIFT+B to adjust the Brightness to a bit darker and then SHIFT+H to bring down the Lightness to about -16.

Example 3

5.

If the text doesn't stand out enough still, you can blur the background a bit by choosing Image »Blur »Blur.

6.

Now, we will add a slight highlight to our text to finalize the effect. Choose Selections »Invert to re-select the text and then choose a bright color to be used in the hightlight for your background swatch. Now move the selection a bit down and to the right to create the highlight. When you're finished, press CTRL+D to deselect.
